About 2 years ago, Jerry and Kenn (one of Jerry’s fraternity pledge brothers) had a conversation about how many people would attend their wedding and their funeral.  Kenn told Jerry that “it’s not about the number of people who show up, but WHO shows up.”  And of course Jerry said, “Wouldn’t it be cool to have a HUGE number of people show up anyways!”  Well, as we all can see here today, he did manage to gather a whole lot of people here.

It’s not an accident that so many of you are here.  Jerry had very few acquaintances.  Every person he met, he became friends with and made an impact in their lives.  I have seen this everywhere he has gone, all over the country and the world. 

One day not too long ago, Jerry and I sat down together and talked about how other people perceived us.  And we talked about the type of people we wanted to become.  We all know the guys that seem to be liked by everyone.  The guys that everyone wanted to be around and invite to their parties, or be invited to when they threw parties.   Well, we thought, “what are the ingredients for becoming so likeable and magnetic?”  We figured #1, we have to seek out a positive attribute about another person and let them know about it….   a compliment!  I remember the day when Jerry came back from work and said that he complimented a co-worker on her hair and it made her day.  Jerry was so happy!  

Well, Jerry had long been doing that already.  Jerry definitely had a kind heart for everyone and wanted to make others feel good.  Jerry had always found a way to uplift me when I was feeling down.  Well, now is a time for all of us to lift each other up and comfort each other.   I encourage you to live like Jerry.  Go on with your days and find someone that you can compliment and brighten that person’s day.  And you will feel the happiness that Jerry felt that day when he came back home from work.
